Sam Orgill of www.proactpartnership.com looks at changes on the use of EU health cards.

As advised by ProACT Partnership earlier this year, the UK clampdown on the use of EU health cards has reached Cyprus.

Technically a UK issued EU health card is no longer valid if a British citizen becomes non-resident. They are deisgned for British people to use whilst living abroad for a maximum of one year.

Once you have become a Cyprus tax resident you should qualify for a Cyprus EU health card to use in other EU countries. This means having to give up your UK EU health card.

Until now Cyprus immigration have accepted the UK EU health cards for immigration purposes as evidence of health cover. From November 2009 this practice has been stopped.
Anybody now wishing to register for Cyprus immigration and tax must now be in possession of either:
1. An E106
2. An E121
3. Private Medical cover
$. In receipt of proof of Social Insurance payments in Cyprus.

This will now be enforced for all new registrations and renewals.

Please note that this change is being driven by the UK authorities. Beware also that the UK may decline to pay for Cyprus health care if you are a Cyprus tax resident and still using a UK EU health card.

Ensuring that you and your family have adequate medical cover is vital in many respects.
Make you that you claim maximum state benefits, but avoid paying the penalty later. Some people may now need private medical cover.
